Bright Island mixes in lots of empty plains with frustrating as heck platforming segments that will seek your demise if you don’t jump as a specific spot. When it comes to the straight-forward blasting, there’s still some entertainment to go from, despite that unlike the sequels, I’m not as motivated to play more than for quick bursts and that is because, the level design is just so dull in what Classics: Revolution is offering on its own. There are even enemy types that require a certain alternative fire tactic to take them out. What I will say is great about at least Bright Island are the new enemy types this collection introduces, such as a Kamikaze that’ll launch bombs at you instead of going straight for the charge. None of the games are flawless, but the sequels had a much higher satisfaction level in my opinion. This Serious Sam game does not include the HD uplift or any tweaks that make it accessible to a more modern audience, which some people like that I suppose…Serious Sam never got rid of its formula, only built upon its foundation. Even at the launch of Early Access, this was coming out after the remasters of the first two Encounter games, along with Serious Sam 2 and 3, which added things like vehicular combat, smarter enemies, physics and faster/better combat. Platforming was also not a strength of the series, and the addition of a new campaign called “Bright Island”, only showcases what I’m glad the later games improved on, by doubling down on the faults of the originals. However, the originals weren’t exactly my favorite of the entrees for occasionally having bland levels that have you just walking through flat or bumpy plains, killing the creatures along the way. It is a classic shooter in that it does have an arcade feel to it, along with secrets and keys to collect. Now that its out at the price of $9.99, is it the definitive Serious Sam experience? As a fan of the series, I’d say…not really.įrom baseline on just combat, its still fun fighting off an exhausting number of monsters with an array of big guns, all of which have their own strengths and weaknesses to take note of.
